Originally titled SIMPLE STEPS, "Jazz Philharmonic" is
a method built on the premise that if you can learn to play an instrument,
you can learn to improvise. Despite Bob Phillip's impressive experience and creditentials as a string teacher, improvisation was not in his bag of tricks. Materials he found to learn and teach this skill seemed to start at "Square 5" rather than at "Square 1". So, when RANDY SABIEN offered his jazz improvisation class at The American String Workshop, Bob signed up. He learned a variety of simple, attainable musical ideas in a step by step approach. By the end of one class, he was already starting to improvise on his own. When he returned home, he wasted no time in hiring Randy to conduct a workshop for his own students in Saline, Michigan. With Bob's boundless enthusiasm and expertise in transforming musical ideas into written form, Randy soon had himself a partner. Now, just one year later, The Jazz Philharmonic Improvisational Method Book and Companion CD are complete. Teachers and students who have tested it are amazed by how user friendly it is and by how much they love the music. With any luck, Jazz Philharmonic will be available from Alfred Publishing later on this year. BOB PHILLIPS has gained a national reputation for having one of the finest high school string programs in the country. His pet project, Fiddlers Philharmonic, is a group of student fiddlers who perform all over the U. S. and abroad. He is also the auther of the critically acclaimed Fiddler's Philharmonic Method Books, available through Alfred Publishing. |
